Family of Catherine^6 Van Wickle
Catherine^6 Van Wickle (John^5, Nicasius^4 (Nicholas), Simon^3, Evert^2, Jentie^1
Jeppes), b. 14 February 1779, Raritan, NJ October 2010 email correspondence between Dan Norum [descendent of Catherine [Van Wicklin] Alfred and Harry Macy 6 Oct 2010 from Dan Norum -- I am interested in information on Catherine Van Wickle's family. My information differs from what is posted [in the VW website above]. You have 3 of the 4 children but not Sophia who is my wife's ancestor. You have the name Alfred, I have Alvord. Do you have any suggestions for me? 6 Oct 2010 from Harry Macy - The only notes I have on Catherine Van Wickle's children come from "Records of the Presbyterian Church of Lyons, Wayne County, New York by Harriett M. Wiles, typewritten manuscript, 1952. I saw this at the New York Public Library but there is also a copy on film at the Family History Library in Salt Lake. Unless I copied Wiles incorrectly, she has the surname as Alfred, and since Wiles was a very experienced transcriber I suspect that error is in the original records. Anyway, she shows these three baptisms of children of John and Catherine "Alfred." 1. Cynthia Van Wickle Alfred, baptized 6 August 1811 2. Abby Eliza Alfred, born 13 August 1813, baptized 9 June 1816 3. Jacob Van Wickle Alfred, born 30 August 1815, baptized 9 June 1816 [same day as Abby Eliza] Given the 30 June 1811 birth date you have for Sophia, I think she has to be the child baptized just a month later as Cynthia. Perhaps the parents changed their minds about the name after the baptism had occurred or perhaps the church record is in error. I have nothing else. Since you show Sophia marrying in Allegany County, I suppose her parents move there, and you should check all available sources for that area to learn what happened to them. If you're lucky either John or Catherine might have left a will or deed naming their children. As you may have discovered, Alford is a New England name. There's also Alvord, with which it is sometimes confused. I looked in my copy of the 1810 New York census index and see that on the same page with John Alford [in Ontario County, p. 245] there is a William Alford, Sr. and William Alford, Jr. It certainly looks like they could be John's father and brother. William's not in New yhork in 1800 so you might look for him in the New England states then. |
